Marie Antoinette style fashion
This dress, a sack-back gown or ‘robe à la française’, was in the late 18th century one of three options a ‘Lady’ could opt for, next to the ‘robe à l’anglaise’, with in the back a remarkably tight bodice and voluminous skirt, and the ‘robe à la polonaise’, of which the skirt was uplifted. One recognizes this type of dress by its Watteau (box) pleats. Sack-back gown and petticoat, green changeant silk with silver and polychrome broché bouquet pattern, ca. 1770-1775.
