Viking long house with a stone-lined hearth in the middle. A fire was kept for cooking and heating and the smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. The hall was often smoky and smelly. The floor of the hall was made of hard-packed earth, covered with reeds or straw. There were long, wooden platforms along each side of the hall against the walls where people slept at night, using pillows and quilts filled with feathers or down, and blanket and furs to keep them warm. by jean

Fresh-Air Room: This shady loggia was originally nothing more than a walkway from the house to the backyard. Now, antique iron lampposts and a metal arbor give these vines a place to grow and create a roof for this outdoor room. Simple concrete pavers in two colors create a checkerboard floor. Four iron chairs with brightly striped cushions provide a place to sit down and enjoy the view of the pool beyond and the potted flowers within. by Killer~

If you don't have a green thumb, try growing moss! Moss gardens- Moss gardens are simple to construct. Put a layer of crushed stone or gravel in the bottom of a vessel for drainage. (Wide, shallow containers look best.) Top that with a layer of potting soil, and then add moss, stones, and plants in any arrangement that strikes your fancy. by Maiden11976
