Establish after school expectations. I think most kids need a little "down time" afterschool but there are a few things that I expect when the kids first come home from school: backpacks emptied {including lunches and putting their planner/notices on the counter for me to read}, shoes and coat put away, and backpacks hung up in their designated spot. We do not have any screen time {video games or television} until after homework is completed. by martina

A nice gift for teachers the first day of school. It's a TEACHERS FIRST AID KIT: Very simple. I got mini floss organizers at the craft store and made a little label in photoshop Then I filled them with Band-Aids, a hand-sanitizer, treats, and other small school stuff. I was inspired when I was saw this big craft box with school supplies. It is stinkin' cute! Then I filled them with Band -Aids, a hand-sanitizer, treats, and other small school stuff. I was inspired when I was saw this big craft box with school supplies. It is stinkin' cute! I wrapped it up with a tag. (The apple is from the "hello teacher kit" on house of 3). THE NOTE CAN READ: Twas the night before school started, and all through the house. All the kids were stirring, trying to find their new blouse. Their backpacks were hung on their doorknobs with care, In hopes that I'd wake up in time to do their hair. I want to be nestled, all snug in my bed, But I'm glad I stayed up and made teacher gifts instead. Because teachers need kuddos and treats that bring cheer, And I am just hoping we have a good school year! by cheryl

I like to use problem solving journals with my kiddos. This is a journal that they use only for problem solving. I use a small 8 x 7 journal with blank pages that I order through our district print shop. I like this size because it gives kids a good amount of space to “show their work” for each problem. They do one problem per page and I find this helps them focus on the problem and to do their work in a neater, more organized way that is easy to read and understand. by rosebud2

How to make homemade kettle corn. This is a delicious (and cheap!) snack for a crowd and it's easy to keep the ingredients ready in the pantry. My kids LOVE it when I have a big bowl ready for them when they come in from playing outside, or when I dish it out for a family movie night. by cheryl

A Christmas tradition, like The Polar Express, our own version. Each year we hide the “Golden Tickets” in our kids’ beds. My husband starts the bedtime routine, while I prepare little bags of popcorn and hot chocolate drinks and place them in the car, oh and don’t forget to have Christmas music playing in the car too! When the kids climb into bed, they will find the ticket hidden under their covers. The kids then grab their slippers and head for by WeAreAllMadHere

The bulletin board behind the desk is called "Change Your Words - Change Your Mindset!" This year, I'm working to help my kids develop a growth mindset. Many of them have had a fixed mindset instilled in them through their families. They have been raised to believe that they are either a "math person" or "not a math person." This summer, I read Carol Dweck's Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. by lorene

It also reinforces these words when they read the stories over and over. I let them illustrate the front cover. The new core talks extensively about conducting close reads. A common best practice is to have students “read with a pencil”. This allows them to find evidence, quotes, etc. directly from the text to mark and review later. I have created this toolbox page with common symbols for my class to use. They make these marks as they go along the passage (during the 1st read) so we can come back and discuss them later (usually during the 2nd and 3rd by geneva

On the first day of school I write my kids a letter telling about myself, and then their task is to write a letter back to me. It gives the kids something simple to do while I deal with parents, school supplies and any other first day hiccups. The letters are really fun to read, and I save to look at again at the end of the year, it’s amazing to see their growth. by carlani

Pencil Challenge: I've seen a lot of pencil ideas, but this one is my favorite! The only thing I would change is I would give each student 2 pencils instead of 1 and I would track their progress on a star chart and have them work for some type of reward when they get enough stars in a row. I'm so glad I saw this! by esmeralda

"Going forward with our service and work is an important way to qualify for revelation. In my study of the scriptures I have noted that most revelation to the children of God comes when they are on the move, not when they are sitting back in their habitations waiting for the Lord to tell them the first step to take."
