Cause and Effect--great idea to do with a picture book. Love using picture books with 5th graders!
Another great idea from a school counseling blog. Read the book "Good-Bye Bully Machine" to the 5th grade and then one of the 5th graders helped me make this. Looks great!
Picture Books About Being Different and Learning To Be Yourself - I love using books to teach my kids about life lessons. Do you have a

Adding memories throughout the year and then reading them on the last day of school. Would LOVE to do this with my 5th graders!
Cause and Effect Listening Center with Graphic Organizers Great listening centers or for your early finishers!! If you are fortunate to have ipods, ipads, or tablets this is a wonderful way to practice cause and effect while listening to great books. You will need to have a QR Scanner APP downloaded on your device to make this work.
Using song lyrics to teach cause and effect in upper elementary classrooms. When students get the gist of cause and effect, take it a step further so they have to do a little bit of inferencing! Free download.
My 5th graders love these silly illustrations and poems. Fun seasonal book for upper grades.

Books Worth Reading
Great choices for chapter book read alouds that will appeal to ages 8 and up. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Some are good choices for younger siblings, too.
Cause and Effect, I love the activities that can go with this book
Cause and Effect = That’s Good, That’s Bad. Love this book!
FREEBIE - my new freebie on cause and effect ! Great for grades one, two, and three. Do your students need to practice cause and effect skills? Try my matching page where students match causes with effects. It also has a math class theme, such as "I practiced my math facts" and "I got fast at addition facts"!
Take-Home Story Time Kits Great Program idea to do weeks there is not a story time. These are very similar to our book bundles, where we match one picture book with a nonfiction book on the same topic.
Integrated Strategy Units in 4th & 5th Grade: Reading notebooks are a great substitute for strategy sheets for fourth and Fifth graders. This notebook allows them to record their thoughts and feelings toward the book, ask questions, consider changes, experience problems, and analyze characters. I love that it is called a reading journal and not a reading log because it makes the journal more appealing for students to express themselves.
BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK: Love this idea to teach kids giving a book a chance. "Blind Date with a Book" Activity for independent reading. Wrap up books and decorate with key words that relate to each. Students pick a book, unwrap it, record it and read for 30 pages. Good date=keep it, finish it, review it. Bad date=return it, and write about why it wasn't the book for you. Great "get to know yourself as a reader" activity!
Read about how I use The Lorax (book and movie) with my 5th graders to teach the Language Arts Common Core Standards!
Teaching Children to Compare & Contrast .y. A great introduction that includes using a fun picture book and differentiated task cards!
