In 1953, miners at the Lion Coal Mine in Wattis, Utah were digging a new tunnel, and broke into an already existing system. The coal found in these tunnels was so old and weathered, it was useless for burning. Further exploration revealed not only the tunnels, but centralized rooms where coal was brought prior to being taken to the surface. Investigators followed the coal seams in the same way as today. Yet none of the North American Indian tribes ever used coal.

Canal Country is loosely based on an area with lots of canals near Stroud in England. The canals were once used to transport goods, now they are leisure facilities for the community. I liked the pattern of roads and fields in the map, which inspired the piece.
Palau’s Jellyfish Lake once had an outlet to the sea, but is now connected to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the surrounding limestone. Millions of jellyfish were trapped in the basin when sea levels dropped, and over time they evolved into a species that have lost the ability to sting because they don’t have to fight off predators. Jellyfish Lake is a snorkeling and swimming extravaganza where you can get up close and personal with an estimated 10 million jellyfish.
