HOW TO: During the Viking-age (793-1066 AD) knitting and crochet were unknown in Scandinavia, so they used another very effective and very old method: nalbinding. Nalbinding is a method of creating a stretchy textile using short lengths of yarn and a single-eyed needle. Fabric is formed by looping the yarn through at least two previously created loops, gradually building up row upon row of loops. Nalbinding predates both knitting and crochet by at least 2000 years.

“Stagecoach” Mary Fields (c. 1832-1914) was born a slave in Tennessee and following the Civil War, she moved to the pioneer community of Cascade, Montana. In 1895, when she was around 60 years old, Fields became the second woman and first African American carrier for the US Postal Service. Despite her age, she never missed a day of work in the ten years she carried the mail and earned the nickname “Stagecoach” for her reliability.

wow, she's gorgeous! - Cléopatra Diane de Mérode was the first woman to dance with a male partner in the Russian Ballet. She continued to dance until her early fifties and was very popular in her ancestral homeland of Austria, where she befriended the artist Gustav Klimt. Cléo de Mérode retired to Biarritz and died in 1966 at age 91 and is entombed at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
Patricia Roberts was born on May 31, 1924 as the daughter of a Pullman car waiter. Harris grew up to become the first African American woman to hold a cabinet position, serve as an ambassador, and head a law school. Harris fought for fair housing and employment practices under the Carter administration as the secretary of housing and urban development (HUD). She died of breast cancer at age 60.
