In 1918, Carrie Crawford Smith opened an employment agency in Evanston, IL to help the rapidly-growing African-American population in the Chicago area find work. Smith used her venture to promote racial advancement in the face of ongoing racism; her instituted “standards” insisted that employers treat her clients with dignity and respect.
