In the Piazza di Spagna, at the base of the Spanish Steps, is the amusing Fountain of the Old Boat (“La Barcaccia”) built in 1627-29 by the famous Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his father. Legend has it that the idea for the fountain was a boat washed up here when the Tiber river flooded. People love to hang around the Spanish Steps, and the Old Boat fountain itself. The fountain water is good for drinking – just step up to the boat!
