From Kate:  The above photo was taken by a friend of mine who was taking photos of damage caused when a room in her house had caught fire, for insurance purposes.  The area she was taking a photo of was the inside of the closet in this fire damaged room. It was taken with a digital camera and has not been inverted to a "negative" as it would appear, nor has it been enhanced in any way. Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. This picture was taken in a Civil War Camp near Washington DC in 1862. Interesting thing is that it shows a soldier with his wife and children. It is hard to say if the woman had just come to visit her husband, or if she was living there in the camp. Either way, it makes an interesting picture. by edna

He looked like an urban hillbilly, with short hair around the ears and curly on top. Bouncing from foot to foot as he played, he seemed dwarfed by his guitar. His jacket was a rusty leather and two sizes too small.....There was no question that this boy was exceptional and that he had touched people but he had only just begun to touch me. by lacey

The photo was taken in 1910. It’s the last photograph taken of Florence Nightingale. (It's rare: she was reluctant throughout her life to be photographed.) It shows 90 year old Florence in her bedroom at her home in London. The photo was taken by Lizzie Caswall Smith. On the back of the photo Smith wrote, “Taken just before she died, house near Park Lane. The only photograph I ever took out of studio. I shall never forget the experience.” by beth

According to Roman legend, Bacchus, the god of wine, had been insulted by a mortal, and vowed that he would unleash his sacred tigers on the next mortal he passed. That mortal was a maiden named Amethysta. In order to protect her from Bacchus’ tigers, the goddess Diana turned her into a quartz statue. Upon seeing this, Bacchus was so remorseful that he wept tears of wine over the maiden. The grapes from the wine turned the statue of Amethysta by Divonsir Borges

Holyrood Abbey. In 1127 while King David I was hunting in the forests to the east of Edinburgh he was thrown from his horse after it had been startled by a hart. The king was saved from being gored by the charging animal when it was startled either by the miraculous appearance of a holy cross descending from the skies or by sunlight reflected from a crucifix which suddenly appeared between the harts antlers. As an act of thanksgiving David I founded Holyrood Abbeyon the site in 1128. by sherry

“Suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”This photo shows the collapse of Torrero Alvaro Munera, as he realized in the middle of the fight the injustice to the animal.
