Each student had a sheet of paper with everyone's name on it. They had to write a nice sentence about everyone in the class. Then each student had 20 nice things written about him or her. We put those in a frame. This activity was great because some of the students in my class don't hear about how great they are everyday at home. Now they have a frame that will stay together rather than just some paper stapled. The kids loved hearing about how great they are from their classmates :) by paige

You could give this to students the first day of school, but I look for math in it, too. A few ideas: Have students count how many of each piece is in the bag and then do a class total; sort them and calculate bag % & fractional parts of each piece and find the class average for those; probability; volume; compare Lucky Charms to other cereals with nutritional values; etc, etc etc by debora

I’m a big fan of one-on-one conferencing with students as a way to connect with them and check for understanding. I use this “deli-style” format with students as a fun way to let them know it is their turn to conference with me. Each student is given a ticket (from 1 to how ever many students you have in class) at the beginning of class and meets me at the designated conference area in the room when they hear the “DING!” and their number appears on the projector screen. Kids love it! by shannon

You put an item in the mystery bag and then have the kids take turns asking questions to try to narrow down the possibilities. It is great to develop deductive reasoning skills. (You could also do this with sticky notes all week and "reveal" it on Friday. Have a separate piece of paper where students place their questions throughout the week. As you have time, move their questions to the "Yes" or "No" side. It will generate excitement all week long.) by tamara
