In what has come to be called the Niihau Incident, or the Battle of Ni?ihau, an off-course Japanese pilot from the attack on Pearl Harbor crash-landed on the island and was captured by locals. The pilot escaped with the assistance of local Japanese residents, but was later recaptured and killed.
