When disaster struck the brave 18-year-old roused dozens of sleeping passengers and helped launch a lifeboat that saved 24 people. He then leaped from the doomed liner into the icy sea and later clambered on to the capsized vessel. He would go on to wed, have seven kids and die in 1983, aged

Maggie Brown - Most people will remember her from the Titanic movie, but according to our tour guide, she was quite as abrasive as Kathy Bates portrayed her. And she wasn't some backwater ignorant redneck. At the time of the Titanic sinking she spoke 6 languages and acted as a translator and advocate for the immigrant widows who survived the wreck.

From the site of the sinking of the Titanic. So sad; it's a graveyard. "This is an appropriate time to note the human cost of that event, and the fact that in this special place at the bottom of the sea, evidence of the human cost, in the form of the shattered wreck, the scattered luggage, fittings and other artifacts, and the faint but unmistakable evidence that this is where people came to rest, is present," says James Delgado, Dir of NOAA.

Since the Titanic was both a fabulous luxury liner and the largest ship ever to sail the seas, passengers were understandably excited about being aboard. These souvenir photos were taken on the ship as mementos of the journey....se

Seven year old Eva Hart immigrating to Canada with her parents as 2nd class passengers on the Titanic. Eva and her mother survived (Lifeboat 14), but her father did not. Eva Hart never forgot what she had seen and heard that night. She is famous for the line: "If a ship is torpedoed, that's war. If it strikes a rock in a storm, that's nature. But just to die because there weren't enough lifeboats, that's ridiculous."

The dollar bill was carried by 50-year old August (Augustus) H. Weikman of Palmyra, New Jersey, a barber on the ship, who was helping crew members launch lifeboats from an upper deck when one of the ship’s boilers exploded and he was blown into the water. But Weikman survived and later wrote on the back the dollar bill: “This note was in my pocket when picked up out of the sea by ‘S.S. Carpathia’ from the wreck of ‘S.S. Titanic’ April 15th
