The breathtakingly beautiful Cocoon Nebula is located about 4,000 light years away toward the constellation of Cygnus. Hidden inside the Cocoon is a newly developing open cluster of stars dominated by a massive star in the center of the above image that opened a hole in an existing molecular cloud through which much of the glowing material flows. The same star, which formed about 100,000 years ago, provides the energy source for much of the emitted and reflected light from this nebula. by allie

The strange-looking oarfish is the longest bony fish in the sea. They can reach 50 feet and weigh 600lbs. They are scaleless and have silvery blue skin with an ornate, red dorsal that runs the entire length of the fish. The pelvic fins are elongated and similarly colored. Oarfish have a small mouth with no visible teeth and their diet consists mainly of plankton, small crustaceans, and small squid that they strain from the water using specially formed gill rakes in their mouth. by David22

For each pinecone cut an 8-inch length of metallic ribbon (ours is 1/8 inch wide). Fold the ribbon in half to mark the middle, then press a thumbtack through the center and into the base of the pinecone. Hide the tack by hot-gluing a bunch of berries around it. Tie the loose ends of the ribbons into a knot, and suspend the cones beneath the banister rail using artist tape. by Pikssik

On January 21, 1968, a fire started on board a B52G bomber during a secret mission over Greenland. Most of the crew bailed out and the aircraft smashed into the Greenland ice sheet. This spread radioactive plutonium, tritium and uranium over a large area. The CIA and US military now had a real Project 57 on their hands. The fire melted the ice and at least one atomic bomb fell into North Star Bay and below the ice covered sea. by cristina

Palau’s Jellyfish Lake once had an outlet to the sea, but is now connected to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the surrounding limestone. Millions of jellyfish were trapped in the basin when sea levels dropped, and over time they evolved into a species that have lost the ability to sting because they don’t have to fight off predators. Jellyfish Lake is a snorkeling and swimming extravaganza where you can get up close and personal with an estimated 10 million jellyfish. by mariam
