Original Pin - Have students write their names on the side of a sheet of paper (first or both first and last). Then have them write one simile that describes them for each letter in their name. Kids can decorate them however they like and the acrostic simile poems can be hung above all student's desks for display. Great way to practice using similes! by NeskaPolita

Wonderful Words
In order to establish control before beginning instruction, students need a way to stop what they are doing so they can listen out for instruction. I envision myself using different strategies, such as having students stop and put their hands on their head, clapping patterns with my hands, and counting down from five to establish control of the class before I begin instruction. This will manage the classroom by making instructions clear and saving time by not having to repeat directions. by aileen

‘Ten Little Nigger Boys‘ was one of several nursery books series that taught white children to count in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Depicted in the book, caricatures of Black boys are eliminated by a series of events, counting down to the last one. For example: “Five little nigger boys made a lion roar; one got swallowed up, and then there were four.” by etta

Inference can be tricky for kids, but it's imperative that they learn how to use clues in the text to figure out what is going on. Make that practice fun with this set of task cards filled with fun cartoons and compelling text. The most important component of this task card resource, is that students must support their inference by telling what information in the text supports their answers. This is a crucial part of the Common Core standards. $ by rosalind
