Susans Free Comparing Monsters - an Activity for I Need My Monster There are a variety of great language skill building activities that can be done with any book you read in your classroom. On the way to understanding complete story elements and construction students need to be able to describe characters and settings and to compare and contrast two or more of each. I usually begin a discussion of comparing and contrasting by having students use two shirts they can see in the classroom at the time two students; anything they can visually reference and find familiar. We then apply the same skills to comparing the characters in the book. A great book for comparing and contrasting is I Need My Monster by Amanda NollandHoward McWilliam I created this comparison chart for a student of mine. I hope you find it helpful too. Stole this student profile idea from the internet, but tweaked it so that it's much more informative for me, plus it's an icebreaker for students the first day (they have to get 5 comments on their "status updates.") Might be helpful for the fish to make new friends. I'll keep it in each student's file all year and refer back to it as needed. I'll add writing samples and return them to students the last day of school along with a personalized by estela

The Hardest Languages to Learn infographic. Great for visual learners! I can't wait to show this in Sp1 next semester when a student complains that Spanish is soooo hard. Then I'll give them all my examples of how Spanish structure and pronunciation are logical, and English is the harder of the two. If a student ever complains again, various classmates invariably respond, "Man, you're loco!" as they start siting my examples. by patrice
