FREUD’S DEFENSE MECHANISMS All of them are UNCOUNSCIOUS except for Suppression. The following are similar but different: * Displacement & Acting out Displacement: emotion is redirected. Acting out: emotion is covered up. * Reaction formation & Undoing & Sublimation Reaction formation: you find a way to stop, what you consider unacceptable, by transforming into the exact opposite. Undoing: putting into action, the exact opposite of the unacceptable behaviour. Sublimation: you find a way to do what you consider unacceptable, by making it acceptable. * Repression & Suppression Repression: not aware of mechanism, unconscious forgetting. Suppression: aware of mechanism, conscious forgetting. In the case of Introjection: modeling behaviour after a more powerful person, said person is not always admired!!! - Think of: Paranoid delusions in Projection. Substance abuse in Denial, Acting Out. Borderline Personality Disorder in Splitting, Passive-Agressive Enuresis in Regression. Somatoform Disorders in Somatization. Phobias as a result of Displacement. Blunted affect of schizophrenics in Isolation of Affect. Obsesive-Compulsive Anxiety Disorder as a result of Intellectualization. Obsesive-Compulsive behaviors in Undoing Dissociative disorder in Depersonalization.
